The Matchplay Championship took place during the week beginning Monday 22nd May at Sandyhills Golf Club
The final on Sunday 28th May was contested between Greg Brown of Cathkin Braes GC and Neil MacRae of Glasgow GC.
Congratulations to Neil MacRae who won the final 2&1 and is the new Matchplay Champion for 2023.
Course report by Vic Skelton -
All the matches were played in good weather conditions on the course of Sandyhills Golf Club, the course was in fine condition with the greens putting well.
The morning semifinals were, as expected, very competitive but Neil MacRae eased through against Matt Clifford, but Greg Brown had to go the 19th to beat Fraser McNeil.
Greg was 2 down with 3 to play but produced 2 timely birdies which saw an extra hole being required.
The final saw a great tussle unfold. There was a good sprinkling of birdies by both players and an eagle at the 16th by Greg but Neil withstood this assault and played out for a 2&1 victory.
This game was played in great spirit and the quality of the golf suitably high for the GGU Matchplay final.
