Glasgow Golf Union 2009 Season Underway
The 2009 Glasgow Golf Union calendar got underway on Saturday 11th April 2009 with Cowglen Golf Club hosting the Glasgow Golf Union Spring Meeting. This competition, which was won by Glasgow Golf Union’s A team manager Steven Machin with a fantastic two round total of four over par 144, was as always the qualifier for the Glasgow Golf Union Matchplay championship, which will be held next weekend again at Cowglen Golf Club.
15 players plus last years champion Gordon Sangster from Cathkin Braes, who carded a respectable joint 3rd place 146, will again battle it out at Cowglen for the Championship and the first order of merit points of the season.
With the new season beckoning, Mark Bookless from Sandyhills will be hoping that he can add to his successes last year where he finished in the quarter finals of the Scottish Boys Matchplay Championship and went on to win The Scottish Boys Strokeplay Championship at Blairgowrie Golf Club. Mark set up a new course record of 67 in the first round going on to finish with a six under par 282 to win by one stroke from Sam Binning of Ranfurly Castle. Mark capped a great season by finishing 5th in the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions competition at Kingsbarns.
Other notable achievements from Glasgow boys saw Shaun Conner from Ralston set the juniors alight finishing 4th in the Scottish boys under 16 Championship and gained selection to The Scottish Golf National Academy under16 development squad.
No doubt Mark and Shaun are hoping for even better things this year and the Glasgow Golf Union Executive are behind them all the way and hope they and all of our amateur golfers, have a great season in 2009.
